The woodpecker’s strong, pointed beak works as both a pry bar and a chisel to remove bark. Woodpeckers feast mainly on the insects found under tree bark. Most birds have one toe pointing back and three pointing forward on each foot. Woodpeckers, however, have two sharply clawed toes pointing in each direction to help them balance on the side of tree trunks.
